Hi Liz!
Hi Everyone!

My name is Kim and I just joined too:) I used to live in Montreal, Qc,
but now live in Auckland, NZ.
I have a 3 yo daughter (Anna) and a 1 yo son (Samuel) who keep me busy &
rooted:)
Being far from my family & friends, I find myself quite isolated too..
and am happy to meet you all here:)

I'm Kim from New Zealand and have 2 little ones of my own (3 &1).
I really do understand what you're feeling as I'm exactly the same...
My children are very tiny, yet what you describe is one of my biggest
fears..
I also ended up studying in a social field (as a psychoeducator) to
always feel needed -
So, yes,.. I really feel for you Kate.. like you said, her independance
is a wonderful reflection of the Great Job you're doing as a Mom.

And like others have said, she'll *always* need you, because you're
'Mom'.. (even if she doesn't always show it..)
I think relationships with our children are like elastics somehow.. they
might stretch away from us (while they're finding/defining themselves),
but they'll always come back.

We understand that eating right can sometimes feel like a challenge. But the good news is that our bodies (and brains!) like familiar foods, and familiar foods can be changed. You can train your brain to want healthy foods for a snack. Here's how:

Start by getting organized. Planning will replace willpower, and you'll feel so much better for your effort. Healthy eating will become a priority if you create a plan to eat regular meals every 3-4 hours: breakfast, lunch, dinner, with a snack between lunch and dinner, and another at bedtime. Get rid of unhealthy snack foods in your house – you're not the only one who doesn't need them. Then go to the market and purchase what you need. Make sure you include lean protein, non-fat or lowfat dairy products, whole grains (100% whole grain bread, oatmeal, brown rice, etc) and fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Cut corners by purchasing fresh, refrigerated, pre-cut and pre-washed foods. Here's a one day menu to get you started:

Breakfast:

Oatmeal
Milk
Berries
Or
Wheat toast
Peanut butter
Banana

Lunch:

Turkey sandwich with avocado
Apple
Milk
Or
Tomato soup
Quesadilla
Grapes

Afternoon snack:

Small handful of almonds
Pear, or fresh fruit in season

Dinner

Chicken (buy a rotisserie chicken if you aren't inclined to cook)
Fresh salsa
Corn tortilla
Salad with cilantro, avocado

Or

Salmon
Brown rice or corn on the cob
Asparagus or broccoli

Bedtime snack:

Plain yogurt
Fresh (frozen) raspberries or blueberries
