I read this kind of condition on a book and suspect this may be due to either candida or some sort of bacteria in lung.
Strengthen immune system is the key and they should do it all the time as bacterias may hide and move to bloodstream.
Diffuse anti bacterial oils, take them in a capsule daily and apply it on chest, back, sole, and back of the head.
You might want to suggest them to do so even after cough is gone.
