Actually, my husband did use thyme but had to dilute it a lot with the fractionated coconut oil but it worked very well!  I think someone on this site posted it a while 
Back... Lavender works for
Him also and no need to dilute.  
Good luck! The oils work in so many ways!  Intuition and trial and error are good ways to learn, but I like testamonials  from this group the best!
