Thank you so much Debbie. That was great information for cats. My cat is 18 years old. He eats constantly, and is as skinny as a rail. I tried the digestzen on the bottom of his paws like KAthy suggested, and was just one time. 3 drops of FCO and 1dr digestzen. Rubbed my hands together and put it on his paws. That was last week. He has gained a 1/2 lb this week!!!! And no throwing up. Don't know why, but it's great. So I'm going to try this once a week and see how he does.

I have another question. He has terrible mats on his belly, and I try to detangle them when he is sleepy and tired, otherwise he tries to bit me. (I used to be a dog groomer so I know about the safty of cutting through mats and taking it very slow when it is so close to the skin). He hates it. Tried putting lavender on me to calm him down but he doesn't like it. Do you have any suggestions? I wish I could just tranqualize him, but then I don't want to give him any drugs. He hasn't had any shots in the past 6 years as he is an inside cat and there are no other animals in the house. He's pretty healthy other than the constant eating and no weight gain till this past week. Thanks for all your help,
Jan in Florida

My sister- in- law just asked me about the oils and her 17 lb. dog.  He

scratches himself all the time.  We both think he has allergies.  Would you

have any recommendations?  THANKS! ~Debbie

Hi...just wanted to add a bit to this conversation. I'm a certified

veterinary technician and a doTERRA consultant. Cats are indeed very

different animals, and (as you well know) are much more sensitive than

their counterparts. Cats do not synthesize many types of medications

in the same manner as humans or other animals, so it pays to be

careful about EO's. I'm not suggesting that EO's are not wonderful

tools for cats! But, it pays to be informed. I also wanted to mention

to those above who were talking about an older cat who eats constantly

and throws up, or even a cat who is losing weight. Those can be

symptoms of hyperthyroidism...very common in cats. Just and FYI :)

We are all sensitive to ketones and phenols, but cats are particularly

sensitive to the monoterpene hydrocarbons pinene and limonene. So it's

definately a good idea to stay away from all the pine and citrus oils.

In addition, you should avoid the oils that are high in phenols-

Oregano, Thyme, Clove, Cassia. And yes, avoid Melaleuca.

The rule of thumb with animals is to treat them like children...dilute

all oils heavily and 1 drop is usually more than enough.

There is a great book called "Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals" by

Kristen Leigh Bell. You may not be happy to read that she will not

recommend any EO's for cats in her book, but instead recommends

hydrosols.  I personally think EO's are great for cats (as you've all

mentioned here) as long as they are used with exreme caution.

Also...I believe that if your animal comes to lick the bottle you can

bet they know what they need (in most cases). If they sneeze or turn

away or lift their lips, probably not the oil for them. We must listen

to our animals. Have a great day!
