Re: [Everything doTERRA] croup?

Croup and coughs are the body detoxifying.  Have patience.  It will take time for the body to go through this.  Oils can reduce the time it takes to recover and can make the coughing not as severe.  Depending on how deep the irritation or congestion is in the lungs or throat,  it may need different methods to be most effective.

From the book Essentials of the Earth, it is suggested that clove, cypress, ginger, melaleuca and thyme are good at reducing mucus.  Clove, marjoram, melaleuca, thyme and sandalwood all have good antibacterial and antiviral properties.

A chest, throat and lymph massage followed by a warm compress is suggested and effective using eucalyptus, peppermint and cypress or melaleuca  This mix is similar to a "vicks rub".  Add frankincense for additional anti inflammatory help.

A "Gargle and Swallow" is also suggested using cinnamon and lemon or oregano and lemon.  For a child this might be difficult.

The last option is not a fun one to consider.  My kids fondly, but crudely refer to it as a "butt bomb".  The fact is that the quickest way to get oils in the lungs is rectally.  You can use a rectal syringe or place your oils in a capsule to be inserted.  The most effective blend we have used is 5 drops breathe, 3 drops frankincense, 10 drops melted virgin coconut oil.  We only use this during very difficult almost uncontrollable coughing situations where the cough is very wet and the irritation is in the lungs.

For our kids, this has been effective at calming cough spasms in just a short time and is effective as a suppressant for a few hours.

Marti,

I have had great results with 3-4 drops of oregano down his spine, breathe on his chest to help open him up, peppermint on his feet to help stop the cough, and diffuse the eucalyptus in his room.  He also liked it when I put a wet warm cloth on his chest (over the breathe)  Have him sip on-guard through out the day. Hope he feels better soon!
