I like to give gifts so I do--but one of the traditions my family started is giving the gift of time--

coupons for Lunch together, a hike together, movies together, an afternoon of drawing together..........etc

As the kids get older and have lives of their own these gifts become more valuable (-:

One of my favorite holiday traditions my husband and I started when we were newlyweds and continued with our children

we hike ,come home dinner and games and then camp out in the living room under the tree. And before we sleep we talk about everything we are thankful for and everything we hope for.

Hi Susan;

We have always kept Christmas fairly simple, and one of the ways we do this, is that we always get a puzzle and a game for Christmas, and as soon as we open them, we play them. It really gives us good family time, and although over the years we have accumulated MANY games, we play them still at regular family nights. So, even though there's never a lot under the tree, it takes all day to open the presents. I have always made sure that the children appreciate what they've been given, and take a few minutes (at least) to really look at their gifts. You can do a table top tree, that's really simple, and can easily be put away for showings of the house. But you're right - enjoy each other best - bake Christmas cookies together - just be together!!

Cheers,

Mary Ann

This year, like every year, I told my 2 daughters to think of the ONE thing or a couple of small things they really want. But this year I really mean it! This year is going to be real low key. The reason is my daughters and I have taken care and lived with my mother for the last 15 years. Last year my Mom passed away leaving the house to me and my 2 brothers. The house is currently on the market. And if any of you have sold your home then you know the Realtors want the house to be very generic. Nothing on the walls and everything beige! So this year there will be no tree, no decorations, none of my snowmen I've collected over the years. Plus because I'll be buying a new condo there isn't going to be the extra money ( and absolutely no credit card purchases) for presents. This year we'll have our stockings, my youngest daughter' favorite thing and a few gifts. But most importantly we'll have each other. And instead of feeling sad we'll concentrate on the future. Moving into a new place. Decorating it. And next Christmas we'll have the tree & everything goes with it. Christmas isn't about things. It's about family. And I count my blessinga every day because I have two wonderful daughters! Happy Holidays To All

I too am thankful for another chance in Life. My daughter reminded me tonight that it was 5 years ago that without any warning I slipped into a coma. A blood vessel in my esphogus had burst and when my daughter came home from school I was non-responsive. I was in a coma for 10 days! During that time the doctors told my daughters there was a chance that IF I did "wake up" I may have no memory. My daughters were 22 & 13 at the time. I can't even imagine how scared they were as they sat
by my bedside. But God didn't want me yet. I woke up as if I was just taking a nap. I had full recall, except for when I went into the coma. My last memory was going to bed the night before. I am thankful for my 2 loving daughters (& my dog)with out them my life wouldn't be complete. I make sure I tell my girls how much I love them. They know it, but it's always nice to hear. Don't wait until something dreadful happens tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and how thankful you are to have them

There are many out there that don't have much but they are thankful for what they do have. So just for a moment let us all remember those that are less fortunate then we are & support your local food banks, toys for tots & other places that help those that are less fortunate than us. Also I would like for people to just sit & listen to someone who has a problem because sometimes the greatest gift is to just have someone to talk to that wont judge you & will try to help if they can.I for one wish I had someone to just listen. Thank you for reading this & just maybe we can make a difference in someone's life

I hear you- we forget the Reason for the Season! Life gets hectic, lots of places to be for us and our families, and we wish we could be together with our extended families and sometimes it's not possible. In getting ready for the season, however you celebrate it, one thing to do is to keep a sense of humor, roll with the punches, and go with the flow. And remember, it's not the 'gee-gaws'and the 'hoo-haws' that make it; but the simple things, the time spent with loved ones, the simple gifts if you are in a place to do them, and if not...the simple gift of You.
I try to keep children's Christmas books around because of their simple beauty and spirit. Even when my grown kids are gone, and I'm here by myself, I'll get one out and read it. And when they're here, they still love the Christmas stories, especially the most wonderful one of all.
I'd like to hear everyone's favorite traditions
One of our favorite traditions is window painting. When my children were young, my husband cut butcher paper (You could use newsprint rolls, etc.) to fit our two big front windows. He then traced some Christmas scenes-some spiritual, some whimsical using an overhead projector. We traced it with a dark marker to make it easier to see, and then we tape it on the inside of the window. We paint it, just like a big coloring book, on the outside of the window using simple poster or tempura paints. Even the littlest grandkids can paint the hay, the manger, even the robes. You can always go back a little later and touch it up!.We put a big light- halogen or otherwise, out in the yard facing the window. You can see it from the road as people drive by, and from the inside of the room because we leave the drapes open. Be sure to outline the figures with dark paint so they stand out from a distance...We have done this for over 25 years, and have neighbors and
strangers  stop to look at and enjoy it. We feel it adds to the spirit of the Season for us and for others!
One of our other family traditions is a Christmas poem/song that I wrote when my children were small. They asked for a Christmas song all their own, and I wrote down what they said they wanted to include, and this is what we came up with... (25 years ago, and now the whole family sings it every year!)---
LONG AGO IN BETHLEHAM
LONG AGO IN BETHLEHEM A LITTLE CHILD WAS BORNUNDERNEATH A SPECIAL STAR THAT SHONE UPON THAT MORNAND WISEMEN CAME, AND ANGELS SANG, AND EVERYONE KNEW JOYAND CHRISTMAS EVE WAS STARTED WITH THAT TINY BABY BOY
ONE SMALL BOY CAME REVERENTLY TO SEE THE NEWBORN KINGAND WONDERED TO HIMSELF WHAT GIFT HE POSSIBLY COULD BRINGA SPARROW WITH A BROKEN WING WAS CRADLED IN HIS HANDWHO'D TRIED TO FLY TOO SOON AND HURT HIS WING WHEN HE DID LAND
THE ONLY FRIEND HE HAD, HE PLACED NEARBY THE BABY'S KNEEAND VERY SOFTLY WHISPERED TO THE BABY, "IT'S FROM ME"AND THEN THE BIRD BEGAN TO SING, AND SUDDENLY HIS BROKEN WINGWAS WHOLE AND HE BEGAN TO FLY, AND SING WITH ANGELS FROM ON HIGH
A KING IS BORN, OH JOYOUS MORNHE WILL SHOW US THE WAY
NOW EVERY YEAR WE CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF GOD'S OWN SONAND TRY TO SHOW AS HE DID OUR CONCERN FOR EVERY ONEHE TAUGHT US THAT THE LEAST OF THESE IS PRECIOUS IN HIS SIGHTAS ONE SMALL BOY AND ONE SMALL BIRD SHOWED LOVE TO HIM THAT NIGHT
music and lyrics (c)Copyright 1976 Debbie Hamilton
(it's ok to use the song if you want, just please be sure to include the Copyright on it.) If you're interested in the music, email me.) HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON, I ENJOY HEARING FROM ALL OF YOU MOMS IN VARIOUS STAGES OF YOUR LIVES!!!

The holidays are especially difficult for a lot of people this year--in addition to the emotional baggage this holiday can bring up, there are financial difficulties too.

I struggle with missing and being sad about not being able to connect with some family members. I also want to be less focused on the commercialism and consumerism of the holidays so I can connect better with the people in my life.

One book I really turn to this time of year is "Unplug the Christmas Machine: A Complete Guide to Putting Love and Joy Back into the Season" by Jo Robinson and Jean C. Staeheli.

I'd appreciate others' suggestions on how to not just "get through" but enjoy this holiday season. Thanks.
