I just pre-cut the block of terracotta clay, purchased at the craft store, into 1.5 ounce pieces.  Each person shapes them as desired using rolling pins, little cookie cutters and toothpicks.  Poke a hole in them and let them air dry for about 24 hours before attaching the ribbon and adding oil :)  Pretty simple!
