Does your friend have a disc bulge or herniation? If not, then the problem is more than likely fascial, i.e. tight piriformis muscle impinging on the sciatic nerve. If this is the case, I have seen great results treating clients with deep tissue fascial massage and self massage using a foam roller and a lacrosse or soft ball. I highly recommend finding an highly qualified fascial therapist with experience treating sciatic pain. I generally see great results within 2-4 sessions.
Here is an article with self treatment exercises and descriptions for how to self massage for sciatic pain.

I wish your friend well and hope this helps.
