RE: [Everything doTERRA] Re: please stop the food safety modernization act

Anyone in Orin Hatch’s district please contact him, he is a co-sponsor of the “Food Safety Modernization Act” (which surprises me)(www.naturalnews.com)Do others agree with us that there are risks to passing the amended Leahy bill? Yes. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R–UT), a champion of natural health, has issued a statement for the record on the bill: “I believe this bill could have potential negative ramifications on the food and dietary supplement industries. One of those concerns would be the over-criminalization of some violations that could affect the affordability and accessibility of certain food and dietary products.”

This happened just last year because of Pennsylvania’s local “food safety” laws which surprisingly are being imposed by a former Monsanto executive. Please read the article below via link

Dear Sj and Ardelle K:

Thank you for contacting me to express your views on the food safety bill:  the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act, S. 510.  I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter.

I am aware of the concerns that this legislation will overregulate producers by creating more rules for small farms and businesses, as well as negatively impacting local farmers' markets and organic producers. However, it is important to know that only foods currently regulated by the FDA will be subject to the reforms in S. 510. In addition to this, Section 403 of this bill maintains the existing firewall between the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as regulated foods will continue to be distinguished from agricultural products.  Small entities producing food for themselves, or marketing the majority of their food directly to consumers, are not subject to registration or new recordkeeping requirements under S. 510.  This includes food sold through farmers' markets, bake sales, public events, and organizational fundraisers.

Under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, certain food businesses were defined as "facilities" and were required to register with the FDA.  Farms and restaurants were exempted from this and will remain exempted under the provisions of S. 510.  In other words, if an entity does not need to register now, it will still not need to register with the passage of S. 510.  Additionally, consideration is given to the unique agricultural practices and requirements of organic foods under the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990.

Finally, small businesses are also given flexibility throughout S. 510.  For example, small processors are given additional time to comply with new food safety practices; and the Secretary of Agriculture may modify or exempt small processors from new hazard analyses and preventive control requirements.  The FDA will also be required to publish several user-friendly compliance guides to assist with implementing new practices.

Like you, I, too, am concerned by the idea of federal agencies overreaching.  However, food production and processing have vastly changed over the past few decades while our food safety laws have not.  Because of this, I felt it was necessary to co-sponsor this legislation and move these needed reforms forward.  In doing so, I will continually monitor the bill to ensure that the protections for small farmers and businesses for which my colleagues and I worked so hard do not become eroded.

Thank you again for contacting me with your comments.  I appreciated hearing your thoughts and concerns on food safety and will keep your views in mind.

Sincerely,

Ben Nelson
U.S. Senator

I think Ben Nelson is a real snake in the grass...so take this with real caution.

I have contacted all my Congressmen, I was told they may not get to this during the next two weeks they are meeting, however it will certianly happen in January. Get a hold of your people and tell them not to vote for this or we will no longer have direct access to food in this country.

Ardelle K Wachter
