[Everything doTERRA] Re: Has anyone heard of doTERRA oils causing Liver Damage?

I've been doing some research of my own for an online class I'm teaching on the science of essential oils.  You're welcome to listen in!  In the Modern Essentials Book, p. 15 it says, "Ketones are sometimes mucolytic and neurotoxic when isolated from other constitutents.  However, all recorded toxic effects come from laboratory testing on guinea pigs and rats.  No documented case exists where oils with a high concentration of ketones (such as mugwort, tansy, sage, and wormwood) have even caused a toxic effect on a human being.  Also, large amounts of these oils would have to be consumed for them to result in a toxic neurological effect."

In "The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils.  The Science of Advanced Aromatherapy" by Kurt Schnaubelt it gives another example, "Sage is grown in many parts of the world.  Its outstanding chemical characteristic is its high content of the monoterpene ketone thujone.  As an isolated substance, thujone is undoubtedly toxic.  It imparts its liver and nerve toxicity to oils such as Thuja and Mugwort.  Oddly enough, toxicity tests have shown that Sage essential oil is less toxic that would be expected, based on it normal thujone content of over 40 percent.  In addition, distilling Sage early in its life cycle, when the leaves are still very small, yields an oil with very low thujone content." (77)

Love this example because it shows how important it is to get the oils in their pure, anadulterated form from a whole plant, and not just certain chemical pulled out.  I have more info, but I gotta run to my son's basketball game.  Will try and post more later!
