Debbie. I agree that doctors are in the patients employ. We each have the right to work with the other. Yes they are just practicing medicine. It would be helpful as a society to stop being afraid of their authority and to tell them the rest of the variables which sure would make sense scientifically. But they also would need to understand said variable and how they are effecting the situation and that means more study and research on topics they may care nothing about and they don't believe can be beneficial.
I think you made the point of why people don't tell their doctors about the natural alternatives they use. They can be arrogant and rude about it. Finding a new doc it tiring. People pick the battles they want to fight. Many feel their doc is good at what he knows and don't want to get into it with him on what he does not. So its just easier to not upset the balance. Same reason you changed to a medical who knew nothing about your alternatives instead of dealing with a naturopath who thought he knew it all, in his modality.
What I've found most helpful. Take a list of concerns and questions. Fully do your research, and have the vocabulary to speak to them at
a level they don't need to dumb everything down. Understand modern medicine is their life's work and they may not want another modality taught to them by a patent who has not had the level of education they have had.
Also know that any kind if nutrition classes in school is a new, the older docs have probably never had one. There are nutritionist that work in hospitals and their their skills and knowledge base is different then holistic nutritionist. Vastly different. So what some of the newer docs may have taken a class in may still not resemble what you know.
Ideally we want to share & learn with and from our medical providers. It us unfortunate that this is not always possible. I used to fly from AK to WA to visit my Nurologist every 6 months as she was the only one I'd meet since my last had retired worth having. Back when you could not get a ticket for under $600 out of AK. It was a $ hardship on our family but worth it. I tested her thoughts on things carefully. I have the vocabulary and was always reading all the knew research and was control of my health and we had a great relationship and mutual respect. She never asked and I never went into what all I did that she did not prescribe for the MS. Drs can be very possessive of their realm. Sometimes sharing is not in the best interest of the relationship. We each must be the judge of that and should not judge others for their course.
Personally I feel the job of the patient is to constantly strive to work out of the docs care, as soon as they can thrive on their own, but we each walk a different path.
