The respiratory system of birds is very different than ours. They have
no way of expelling particulate matter that makes its way into their
lungs. (We can hack up mucous and phlegm when we are in a smoky
environment for example. They can't. Once it's there, it's there.) It
may not cause immediate issues, but it can start granulomas and other
issues in their system that can shorten their life span. Some oils are
absolutely toxic, where others may be beneficially absorbed. Tea Trea
(Melaleuca) is TOXIC. The "stronger" or "harsher" ones are likely more
problematic. Vets generally advise against ANY aromatics around birds,
so I don't use the diffuser (I have 5 parrots)
I am not a vet, but I have worked professionally with parrots for
about 6 years, and with native wildlife another couple of years, so
have learned a lot directly from vets. I'd recommend the birds being
in a different room than the diffuser when it's running, at least.
There is a group on yahoo called "essential bird" that you might want
to check out. They recommend YL oils, but since we know doTERRA is
better, it might be a place to start if you really want to use them
around the birds.
