I'm beth. Here are some notes from Dr. Sylvia Rimm's book on Smart Parenting

"Play as learning. Children learn through play. The following are some toys and the corresponding skills that can be learned:

                     TOYS                                   SKILLS

1. puppets, dolls, dress-up costumes, masks                 imagination, role-playing
                                                                                   emotional expressiveness

2. music, tapes, nursery rhymes                                   spatial, listening skills, prereading

3. letter and number cards, games,                                 prereading, math, cooperative &
                                                                                   competitive skills

4. books                                                                      imagination, verbal & attention
                                                                                    skills

Maybe at 1 year old, you can try first books for visual and the music tapes and nursery rhymes. and simple puppets & dolls. Be happy mommy!
