I work on a scent free floor...yet every day there are numerous scents to contend with:
- Lysol,
- Perfumes,
- Multi-ethnic Food,
- Other sprays,
- Cleaners
- Scented soaps
- I'm allergic to oranges (scent and from eating) and I had a guy bring an orange EVERY DAY and put it my face before taking it away to peel and eat...that's terrorizing
- Smokers
- scented tea's
- Aromatic coffee's
- smelly people
- Not mention loud people (who don't understand what it means to be in a shared work environment)
If i were you I'd tell them you have to apply the oils to deal with those other smells around you so you can get through the day without deveoping migraines yourself!
or...tell them you stopped...and it must be something else that the person is smelling and then lodge your own complaint against this person and your manager...if you need to get a doctors note this will be your saviour if they are trying to fire you.
This is nothing more than a toxic environments of unhappy people at work looking to create diversion from the real issues in their lives. Will pray for all those who have to deal with ignorant people...it's not easy.

I work in an office with about 200 people, but I'm in asmaller space on the floor with 4-5 people. One of my co-workersstarted to complain about the scents I was using when I moved intothis space last July. At first she just said she didn't like thescents, but after about a month she complained to HR that they werecausing migraines, but not for her, for her friend (whom she hasshared this space with for several years). I was using the peppermintto help with Hot flashes (worked great) and several of the others inthe office liked the smell so much they asked me for some. They wereusing it as a 'pick me up' in the late afternoon. Even though westopped using the oils after she complained, I was still being accusedof smelling like mint and this person who started the complaints wenton to spead malicious stories through out the office about how theywere triggering her asthma and she couldn't breathe, which made me outto be the evil one. I started to recieve the 'cold shoulder' frommany others on the floor. She also encouraged some co-workers tocomplain as well.It all seemed to come to a head in Novemeber, when she became veryholstile with me and mean.. saying things like I stunk, or I wasoffensive and she started to yell at me when I tried to explain thatI'd not used any oils. She became hostile and angry and yelled thatthey were coming out my pores. I don't have a very thick skin, so itwas very upsetting and I ended up having to leave the office afterthat incident and several times prior to this.HR got involved and basically asked that I use the oils only when Ineeded them for medicinal purposes. They also placed two Airpurifiers in our space and require that we use them all the time.Unfortunately for me, even tho I suspect (as many others have noted)that my oils are not the problem but an easy target because the scentsare strong, I can't prove it. It is also very coincidental that wehad two smokers move into our space and some dust issues (fromfurniture being moved), at the same time this co-worker started tocomplain about her asthma.I don't think that your employer can ask you to stop using personalcare products, especially when you are using them for medicinalpurposes. I believe they have to try and accomidate you and yourneeds. Which is what my employer did.As for the issue with co-workers and harrassment, that is not allowedeither and I had to file an 'harrassment complaint'. After this, thecomplainers were not allowed to discuss this issue with anyone else inthe office, but inforcing that was anther story (it actually ended upon 'Facebook' which is a total violation of company policy)... butthat is another issue.. good luck to you and if you'd like to emailme direct or call me I'd be happy to share with you in detail mysituation..
