Our 5 yr old Shih Tzu is extremely allergic to fleas, and this being the Year of the Ninja Flea, has had a rough time of it.
In the past, we have gone the traditional route (Frontline and flea bombs) but this year, nothing has worked. The vet has had us continue with the frontline, but I now treat the house with an herbal product and a blend of Terrashield and Lemongrass. As of today, the infestation has stopped and nary a flea is in sight at the moment.
Ming is still suffering from secondary skin issues from the original flea alleriges. He has an overall dry skin condition coupled with a staph infection on areas of his ears (inside and out), cheeks, corners of his mouth, and under his chin. I am not comfortable with the long term doses of antibiotics and prednesone he's been prescribed. He has been on the meds for over 5 months with slight improvement but not eliminated. His skin smells awful, he is constantly itching, and he is miserable.
I also clean each area with a chlorhexadrine soap twice a day, making sure to removed any crusted buildup. This is quite painful for him. In an effort to find a different solution, I have weaned him off the meds (with my vets ok) to see how he reacts with the wash only.
Outside of the inflammation slightly increasing there has been no change in the staph-and he's still miserable.. I would like to treat this problem with oils if possible.
I know that animals have to be treated carefully, especially around the eyes/ears/nose, which is where the areas of main infection are. I do have FCO to dilute with but need advice on where to start.
He is feed a natural grain free dog kibble with occasional wet food in the same line.
We have a tea trea oil shampoo from the vet, but all it did was overdry his skin.
I've been using aloe vera over the flare spots (straight from the plant).
We love our littel boy and want to see him back to his playful happy self!
