The oils are very powerful and could be injurious to the inner ear. We always suggest that they be put on the outside of the ear, front and back and sometimes even down the jawline.
If and when you are dealing with an ear infection and there is a lot of pain you can put a drop of oil on a cotton ball and set it inside the ear. Making sure the oil does not drip off the cotton, but rather it acts aromatically, to help relieve pain.
