The smell in the basement is coming from dampness. It could be from a leak, moisture coming up through the foundation or mold from a previous water problem. Dehumidifier can help remove some of the moisture. I would be really careful how I stored my items. You might be better off storing at a storage place which regulates the humidity. Remember, you can mask the smell, but unless the problem is fixed, the smell will always be there.
