If you wish to follow the story on Facebook - I use the hashtag #nevergiveup in order get the topic to trend in hopes to help others.Day 1: For those of you following our Essential Oils Theory Testing - I put Coriander Oil on Lydia's feet last night without dilution - 1 drop per foot. It's an oil that can be applied "neat" (without dilution) - and I wanted to test the night application theory (apply to bottoms of feet at night because 1. the pores of your feet are the biggest on your bottom and 2. pores open more at night). Lydia woke up at 135 at 8 AM. She didn't eat 1/2 of her cereal (but we had already given her the insulin for it - 25g of carbs for the entire meal, typically).
Because she didn't eat 1/2 of her cereal - I had to compensate her for the insulin I gave her with more carbs (7g of carbs needed to be added to her meal). SO - I reached for the all-time-favorite snack - RAISINS. If you know anything about carbs and sugars - raisins are high in sugar...and they keep your BG high for a longer period of time than, say, white table sugar. I gave her 7g of carbs in raisins. (Side note - whenever we give her raisins - it send her sugars high longer than the 2 hour window of the insulin. This gets pretty technical...so I won't dive in).
Her lunch reading - 94!!! I was SHOCKED!!!! Like I said, usually when we give her raisins - the sugars in raisins stick with you longer than the insulin does. Usually we would see numbers in the high 200s!!!
Conclusion for today so far: Coriander Oil is improving the effectiveness of the insulin we're giving her. #nevergiveup #numbersdontlieDay 2: Coriander Oil strikes again! Yesterday we celebrated my god-daugther's 3rd birthday with a BBQ and ice cream. Of course - like most birthday celebrations, the kids could care less about the food, until the dessert comes out. Lydia barely ate dinner...but chowed down some chocolate ice cream. Of course, we gave her the appropriate amount of insulin for her dinner AND for her ice cream. I will admit before dinner, Lydia's BG reading was 300 (oddly high considering she didn't have snack between lunch and her nap).
When we got home - it was already time for her nighttime bottle and PJs. So - we did our normal routine...PJs on, BG reading and then bottle. Her BG reading was 247 and we compensated for that plus her bottle (8g).
Before bedtime (2 hours after her bottle) - I always check her again. Her BG reading was 194. Which is typically perfect before bedtime, since she has to go about 10 hours without food as she sleeps.
I put 1 drop of Coriander Oil (without dilution) on the bottom of each foot and covered them with socks. Lydia slept calmly through the night and woke up at 8:15 asking for a bottle. (Usually if she asks for a bottle, it means she's low...like she's telling us that she doesn't feel normal or she's hungry - like most kids do). I checked her morning BG reading - 82!!!
We gave her a 5oz bottle of milk plus 1/2 cup of Wegmans Vanilla Super Yogurt. Again, because it's vanilla flavored, there's typically more sugar in it than a 1/2 cup of cereal and milk. Rather than eating her typical 24 g of carbs in the morning - she ate 28 g of carbs. (More carbs = higher BG).
Lunch time BG reading - 61!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's low for any human. She was WICKED cranky and actually asked for french fries as we left Barnes & Nobles (thanks FIVE GUYS!). OF COURSE we didn't get her french fries...but got home in time to feed her the typical lunch.
I'm shocked (and happy!!) at the lunch reading!! Let's see how dinner turns out. #nevergiveup #numbersdontlieDay 3: (Lost it somewhere in the mix)Day 4: Day 4 of Coriander Oil was another success!!! BG readings went like this today -
9:30 AM Breakfast: 104, then she ate 28 g of carbs that included 1 piece of french toast (no syrup) covered in Cinnamon, 1 egg, 2 pieces of bacon and a 5 oz bottle of milk.
12:30 PM Lunch: 130, then she ate 25 g of carbs that included her typical lunch except she had potato chips instead of toast.
4 PM Snack: 214, then she ate 15g of chocolate soft serve ice cream during her BFF's birthday celebration.
6:30 PM DInner: 233, then she ate 27g of carbs, including 9g of raisins (that should have sent her sugar skyrocketing for a while!)
8:30 PM Snack: 194, then she ate a 5 oz bottle (8g of carbs).
10 PM Bedtime: 175!!!!!!!
Again - if you know anything about a day full of snacking and sugar, these numbers shouldn't happening without me giving her extra insulin (which I'm not!)
Tonight - I'm using On Guard Blend Oil (which contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus and Rosemary. It's supposed to fight against any illness inside...and promotes a healthy immune system (which is great for someone with an auto-immune disease). We'll see what happens!!#nevergiveup #numbersdontlieDay 5: Day 5 of Essential Oils - I didn't use Coriander Oil on Lydia yesterday. The night before I put On Guard (which contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus and Rosemary Oils). This oil is to help fight anything that's going on inside you - it helps boost your immune system.
Her readings never went below 100 yesterday - Breakfast 145, Lunch 169, Dinner 269, Snack at night 105 and Bedtime 255. If you've been following this, usually the Bedtime reading and the following Breakfast reading aren't that far off from each other (unless we do a late breakfast).
Last night I put Coriander Oil back on her feet and rubbed the oil in more that I've ever done before. There's an aroma-touch technique recommended for rubbing in the oils that I used last night. After I rubbed in the Coriander Oil, I put socks on her and she fell asleep.
This morning's reading for breakfast - 68!!!!!!!!!!!! That's LOW (for even an adult!) If she continues to have low readings like this, our nurse will reduce her insulin during the night...so we'll actually be seeing a REDUCTION IN MEDICINE due to OILS! #nevergiveup #numbersdontlieDay 6: Day 6 of Coriander Oil - SUCCESS AGAIN! Like I reported before, Lydia woke up at 62...the remainder of the day went like this:
Lunch: 199 (a little high...but she had a full piece of toast for breakfast)
Woke up from her nap at 5 PM at 95 (but she didn't finish 3 oz of her bottle from lunch, but got insulin for it)
She was WICKED cranky about a 1/2 hr before her bottle (snack) before bed. So - we checked her BG and it was 297 (high!). We gave her the nighttime bottle then and corrected for both the BG reading and her 8g of milk.
Before bed: 258. Still high but coming down and she still had some insulin working in her system to bring it down a little more.
Before she fell asleep, I managed to put Coriander Oil on both her feet and massage the oil in before covering her feet with socks. I put 2 drops on each foot this time because she was riding so high towards the last part of the day.
This morning she woke up at 7:45 again and seemed fine. Just tied acting, like always when she first wakes up. She didn't ask for a bottle - but didn't say much either. We decided to check her blood just to make sure - 61!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She came down from 258 again to 61!!!!
We see her nurse tomorrow to put her Medtronic Sensor on her - which will take her tissue glucose readings every 10 min. I'm sure she's going to have us back down from her overnight insulin because 61 is too low even for an adult.Day 7: Day 7 of Essential Oils - Another SUCCESSFUL day! Remember - I rubbed Coriander Oil into both feet before she went to sleep and she woke up yesterday - at 61!!!!!!!!!! - asking for a bottle.
The rest of the day she was high with readings at 235 (lunch), 213 (dinner), 190 (nighttime snack) and 219 (bedtime check). I took some advice and put more oil on her feet (1 drop each) after dinner and before her bath.
Last night I put 1 drop of Coriander Oil on the bottom of each foot, but rather than rubbing the oil into the entire bottoms of her feet, I focused rubbing the oil into the two areas associated with the pancreas (according to the reflexology chart from www.eeoils.me below).
This morning Lydia came walking into our room at 5 AM a little whiny. We tried to get her to sleep with us but she was so fidgety. At 7 AM we checked her blood and she was at 57!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course we gave her a bottle right away and she'll eat breakfast at her normal hour (8:30). We'll see how the rest of the day goes. #nevergiveup #numbersdontlieDay 8 of Essential Oils - I did Coriander Oil again last night. 1 full drop of Coriander Oil on each foot, but only massaged into the spots of the foot that correlate to the pancreas (right in the arches). Remember - we had a reduced her 3 AM insulin from .125 units to .1 unit.
Lydia slept through the night again (and so did Charlotte!!!!) and Ryan and I work her up at 7:45 just to test her blood sugar. She was 207. I felt a little defeated then...but she hadn't gotten her 8AM basal insulin (she gets a small amount every hour = basal insulin).
By the time we sat down for breakfast at 8:35 AM - she was 150 ON THE NOSE! That's the perfect reading for a child/toddler. The optimum BG reading for a child/toddler is somewhere between 100-200 because they're constantly playing and growing.
I did one "perfume shake" (putting my finger on top of the oil bottle and shaking it to get a small amount on my finger) per foot and massaged it into the same areas (arches) before I put her socks on this morning. I'm hoping this helps with her breakfast carb intake and her lunch readings will be great as well.
Breakfast carbs = 8g of milk, 20g of french toast (with plain ground cinnamon, which aids in digestion and insulin response)...so 28g of carbs total for breakfast...which is 4g more than usual, plus wheat to contend with.

Day 8 Essential Oils Cont'd. I felt a little defeated today with Lydia's numbers (and attitude). She was CRANKY all day - because she was riding high all day. After her fantastic breakfast reading (150), the day continued like this:
Freak out in the car between breakfast and lunch - 197. I actually pulled over on the highway because she was MELTING DOWN and I thought she could possibly be low. NOPE!
Lunch - 245
Snack - 217
Dinner - 264
Snack - 215
And then we gave her a bath and I saw that her insulin pump cord had blood in it. I'm assuming that this is what they call an "occulsion" - a blockage possibly because the blood is backing up into the pump cord. I'll be emailing the nurse tonight about it to get an answer tomorrow. If that's what it means, then today's numbers are all off!!! I hope that's what it means and tomorrow is better because we've changed the site!
#nevergiveupDay 9 of Essential Oil - ANOTHER ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS! Like I said yesterday, I felt very defeated at Lydia's numbers yesterday. But I've learned that the blood backing up in her pump cord is a bad sign. She must have moved a certain way to hit a blood vessel. So when she was getting insulin yesterday - half of it was her own blood.
SO...on to Day 9. She woke up great...smile on her face and in great spirits. Her BG readings went like this...
Breakfast - 161. She ate 21g of Wegmans Organic Vanilla Yogurt and 8g of whole milk. She didn't finish all of her yogurt...but that was probably 2g of carbs at the most.
Lunch - 117. She BEGGED for her lunchtime bottle at 11:45. I tried to push her off until 12 as long as I could - but she just didn't want to wait. I took her BG reading and realized she was truly hungry...not just jealous of Charlotte eating early. So Lydia ate her typical 19g of carbs for lunch - 8g of milk, 1g for string cheese, 10g of bread, turkey and cucumbers.
Dinner - 82. AMAZED at this number. I haven't seen a number this low for dinner in a while. It made me quiet happy. For dinner she ate a good size piece of meat lasagna, cucumbers and some avocado and...of course...her milk. A total of 34g (estimated). She then had some of my apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream.
Snack - 165. Even better since I guessed at the carbs for dinner tonight! She had another 8g bottle.
I rubbed 1 drop of Coriander Oil per foot as we got her dressed for bed. It's part of our nighttime routine now. It's no longer ticklish for her - which makes it easier on me!
These numbers are WICKED awesome!!! I only put Coriander Oil on her once this morning as she got dressed and before she ate breakfast. I didn't even use a full drop - just the perfume shake method and rubbed in the oil into the corresponding spot to the pancreas on her foot.
I did find another oil to try. Ocotea Oil - but Young Living Oils - from the cinnamon family...derived from the female Ocotea Trees in Ecuador. YL claims that Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics have used this oil to fully remove insulin from their routine. I feel like that's REALLY far fetched for a Type 1 - but then again...a lot of these ads wrap type 1 and 2 diabetics together. I ordered a bottle of it today...I'll be reporting on those readings as well!
Day 10: Another day of Essential Oils. Today got away from me. With Charlotte's baptism as the focus, Lydia's Coriander Oil Treatment played second fiddle...as we saw a dramatic difference in her numbers!!!
She started off great! Actually...she woke up at 2:30 AM walking into our room asking to sleep with us. She fell asleep last night after her bottle at a BG reading of 249 (YIKES!). I didn't test her again until she came into our room.
To back up - I applied 1.5 drops last night after her bath. I did 1 full drop on each foot and rubbed it over the entire bottoms of her feet...then did the perfume-shake and focused only on the corresponding pancreas area on her foot.
Like I mentioned - she woke up early...crawled into our bed and was so fidgety!!! I thought "Great! She's still high!" So I took her blood. She was 87!!!!!! I immediately went down and got her a bottle so she would sustain through the night. She calmed down afterwards and fell asleep. (I gave her the insulin for the bottle - 8g of carbs).
At 8:15 AM, it was time for breakfast. She was 140 for breakfast!!! PERFECT! We got dressed for church and ran out the door. And I forgot to put her 2nd dosage of Coriander Oil on her.
Lunch was in the 200s...Dinner was in the 200s...and her bedtime snack was 310!!!!! She didn't even eat any of her sister's cake! So...back to Coriander Oil! I put another 1.5 drops of oil per foot in the same manner. HOPEFULLY her numbers will be better tomorrow!!!
#nevergiveupI have found that more than 12 hours off of Coriander Oil and Lydia's BG levels skyrocket. I put 1.5 drops of Coriander Oil on her feet again last night and she came a bit from the 310 reading...but breakfast this am was 249. Didn't come down by much.
I put 2 perfume-shakes per foot and massaged the oil in before we left the house this morning (after breakfast). By lunch she was back to her normal level with a lunch BG reading of 110!

Day 11: No postDay 12 of Essential Oils - Coriander + On Guard Oils.
(Yes, I know, I haven't posted about Day 11 But this needs to be said now.)
I did something different last night. Rather than picking which oil to use - Coriander or On Guard Blend - I did both. I started with 1.5 drops of Coriander Oil on both feet. I rubbed it in until it was dried...and focused on the corresponding spots to the pancreas.
Once the Coriander Oil was dry, I put .5 drop (the perfume-shake method) of On Guard on both feet, doing the Aroma Touch Method (heel to toes). She went to sleep higher than usual - 269 - because we dipped into some ice cream and I miscalculated how much she ate. I gave her 8g of carbs...but obviously that wasn't enough.
So...she woke up in the middle of the night (12:30) coughing and calling for me. I thought, "Great! She's picked up the cough again!" But it didn't last long and she just wanted to cuddle. So she came into bed with us and I took her blood just to be sure she wasn't still high. NOPE! She was 151!!
When she woke up, she was happy and walking around. She asked to get dressed and then wanted to eat - so I got her dressed and put another perfume shake of Coriander Oil on her feet before I put her socks on. Before I gave her the bottle, I checked her again - this time she was 77!!! Just a little low, but not in the danger zone. She ate a big breakfast - 8g of milk + 13g of vanilla yogurt + 10g of toast with butter = 31g of carbs total.
We went out for a bit to get some plants - but she didn't do much exercise. Rode in the car...got into a shopping cart...and then when we got home, got into the swing. No running around...no heavy exercise. At 12:00, she walked up the deck stairs and was ready to eat. Calmly washed her hands...got into her chair...whined a bit for her bottle as I warmed up the milk...and then I took her BG reading again. This time she was 67!!!!!!! DEFINITELY LOW this time!
She ate her typical lunch (8g of milk + 1g of string cheese + 7g of a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie = 16g of carbs) and now is watching some Peppa Pig before we put more Coriander Oil on her feet and take a nap. I cannot wait to see what her dinner reading is!!
