I ran across this handy recipe last year. It works well for pet messes and wet matresses.
Mix the following ingredients in a large pitcher or gallon jug:
1-2 bottle(s) of hydrogen peroxide
1-2 T baking soda
3-5 drops dish soap
10-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. I've used melaleuca, lavender and lemongrass.
Mop up the mess as best you can. Test a small spot on a hidden part of your carpet first. Dilute with 1/4 part water if it's too strong and test again. I have tan carpet. It's never been too strong for me. Pour the mixture over the spot. Let it sit for 20 minutes to an hour. Mop it up with old towels and put a fan on it to dry.
Also, works well for mattresses. If possible, place the mattress in the sun to dry.
Steam is also amazing for deodorizing. We own a Smart Living Steam mop. When using the mop, I clean up the mess the best I can. Then, I pour 1-2 Cups of straight white vinegar mixed with several drops of lavender or Melaleuca essential oil over the spot, let it sit 10-15 minutes and then steam the area for 5 minutes or more depending on the size and age of the spot. You house will smell like vinegar and the essential oils but it quickly goes away. Sometimes, I need to do it more than once if it's an old or particularly large or stubborn pet stain.
Originally, I used 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide diluted to 3% but I've since run our and haven't managed to replace it.
