i am a working mom and work/life balance seems like a constant struggle. does anyone have any good tips for how to manage things better? what is the secret to doing well in a career AND being an attentive, present, patient mom?

i would really love to hear any ideas, especially with the holidays coming up, snowy weather, and so little daylight.

thanks so much!

>I agree that work/life balance is a tough struggle. One thing that has
helped me is to simplify my life as much as possible to free up time and
energy for my priorities (family, friends, helping others). For me that
includes clutter clearing, time management, and being reasonably
organized. I also am trying to learn ways to be kinder to myself. I
think moms sometimes are awfully hard on themselves.

Sometimes it's hard, but I try to stay in the present moment. When you are at work, you're at work. When you are with you kids, be with your kids. Leave your problems with work at work. When you're with your family, be with your family. Try not to let the lines blur between work and family. It takes some discipline in your state of mind to get use to, but it can be managed on some sort of level. That's what I try to do. You also have to make some "me" time. At least a half an hour each day should be devoted for something that you like to do. If you like to read, take a nap, watch a certain show, take a bath, something that will relax you and recharge you. If you don't take care of you, no one else will.

*Simple things make my life so much less stressful:*
**
**I buy each person their own brand of socks, and only that brand and color,
so they are easy to match and put away, (plus, when the washing machine eats
them, there is always one to match.)*
**I schedule doctor appointments in the evening and on weekends, (yes, our
family doctor works on Saturdays.) That lessens the stress on my taking too
much time off work.*
** I don't worry about being a super mom...I send in store bought goodies
for school parties.
* My children all have a bedtime of 9:00 pm. If they are older, they can
stay in their rooms and read, watch tv or whatever, but I know from 9:00
pm-11:00 I can relax in the tub, watch shows I've tivoed, and spend some
quality time with my husband. It is amazing how spending quality time with
him encourages him to do more for me, like pick up prescriptions, take kids
here or there.*

*There are more ideas regarding stress busters on my blog at*

Hi to all the great moms out there!  I just would like to share with you my greatest experience in life.  GOD has given me my second life to be with my family.  I'm a cancer survivor.  I was detected to have multiple myeloma.  It's cancer of the blood sometime April 2006.  I had undergone a chemotherapy using VAD (vincristine, adriblastina, and dexamethorphan).  I was on remission for a year then my doctor asked to take Thalidomide for my second degree chemo.  Im currently on remission and very thankful to GOD because he is always at my side.  I still have an eight year old child.  All I ask from Him is to give me extra time to be with my family especially my little girl.  So I always see to it that I spend each day to the fullest as if it is the last day of my life.  Keep smiling and stay happy with your family.  All problems will always have solutions.

What a great message, Karen!
Quaker had asked me to post a similar message, regarding giving back during the holidays:
Looking to make the holidays extra special without draining your wallet? Why not start a family tradition of giving back by volunteering at a food pantry or local shelter?

> Good Morning, I have one queastion for all you ladies, with Thanksgiving comming this week,lets all sit back & think of what we are thankful for. There are many out there that don't have much but they are thankful for what they do have. So just for a moment let us all remember those that are less fortunate then we are & support your local food banks,toys for tots & other places that help those that are less fortunate than us. Also I would like for people to just sit & listen to someone who has a problem because sometimes the greatest gift is to just have someone to talk to that wont judge you & will try to help if they can.I for one wish I had someone to just listen. Thank you for reading this & just maybe we can make a difference in someone's life

A Dozen Reasons Why I am Thankful for Being a Mom

I am thankful for being a mom of the sweetest little thing I ever had: my daughter.

… for kissing my flaws thinking that I am perfect;
… for needing my arms as she lays to sleep;
… for laughing while she's crying as I transform into a tickle monster or make some silly jokes;
… for being happy with little things we share;
… for testing the level of my sanity when her endless tantrum begins;
… for reminding me that the daily routines we do together are actually different, and each day I learn from it;
… for training my resistance to patience;
…for teaching me not to be embarrassed when she does something awful in the middle of the crowd because I am a mom and willing to do the right way in the midst of it all;
… for asking me to hug her, which actually means carry her even if she is almost half my weight – because this made me realize as a sweet alternative to dumbbell exercise;
… for helping me dig through my creativity;
… for helping me define unconditional love;
… for totally transforming my life and my heart's desires that helped me understand why my mother cried on my wedding day (I'll tell you why someday).

And I won't forget my husband. I thank you for everything!

Holiday Blues

The holidays are especially difficult for a lot of people this year--in addition to the emotional baggage this holiday can bring up, there are financial difficulties too.

I struggle with missing and being sad about not being able to connect with some family members. I also want to be less focused on the commercialism and consumerism of the holidays so I can connect better with the people in my life.

One book I really turn to this time of year is "Unplug the Christmas Machine: A Complete Guide to Putting Love and Joy Back into the Season" by Jo Robinson and Jean C. Staeheli.

I'd appreciate others' suggestions on how to not just "get through" but enjoy this holiday season. Thanks.
