My Lotus is running almost every day and I have never cleaned it. I know I should not admit to that but it works so well I just leave it alone. Someone told me that if I didn't run it dry then it would not need the constant cleaning.  Not sure about that but I do it anyway. I also found this long thin brush from Bed Bath and Beyond and it reaches down really well and the bristles are just strong enough to clean, if and when I ever do clean it again.
