who have, and that is where the following advice comes from.
Do not wet the dog with water! Water will set the smell right into the
fur.
Make a cleaning solution "on the spot" as follows: 1 quart of 3%
hydrogen peroxide; 1/4 cup baking soda; 1 tsp liquid soap Massage this
mixture into the dog's fur while the mixture is bubbling. Rinse with
tap water. (This is enough for a small terrier-type dog. Scale the
recipe up as needed.) Some experts suggest only washing the parts that
have been sprayed, as the odour may spread over the entire dog.
However, that may be impractical!
Another product that is apparently good is Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor
Remover. This has enzymes in it that neutralize the skunk odor. I
think I would be inclined to use the hydrogen peroxide mixture first,
and, after rinsing it off, use the Nature's Miracle for the enzymes it
has.
Here's why hydrogen peroxide works: skunk spray contains several
thiols: trans-2-Butenyl thioacetate and 2-Quinolinemethanethiol. The
oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide releases the thiols (the odor part) as
it foams up, and the detergent removes the oily part that holds the
odor in the animal's fur.
I hope you never have to use this remedy, but good luck with it if you
do!
