Re: [Everything doTERRA] DOGS AND BREATHE URGENT REQUEST FIRE

Thanks for your thoughts Pat. My cat seems fine with the oils too and I have used Frankincense and Myrrh to heal wounds and lavender for stress, but I do not want to hurt my cat. I found statements from multiple sites staying that essential oils can be toxic to cats. I know there can be a lot of misinformation out there and I was hoping to get some clarity.  I think it is important that we know why these claims are made and if they are true. Here are my findings. Please let me know if you have other information.

Here are two links saying oils re toxic to cats:

http://www.messybeast.com/teatree.htm
http://essential-oil.com/uses-of-essential-oils_caution-your-kitty-why-essential-oils-can-be-toxic-to-cats_770.html

The Modern Essentials book says "All essential oils have alcohols except birch, cassia, clove, cypress, white fir, lemon, marjoram, and in them. Alcohols are anti-bacterial, anti-infectious, and antiviral." Benzly Alcohol (the one toxic to cats is in Ylang Ylang and Jasmine). Phenols are in basil, birch, cinnamon, clove, fennel, wintergreen, melaleuca, oregano, peppermint, thyme, cassia, marjoram, and ylang ylang.

I found this list of toxic oils for cats from http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/pets-dogs-cats-snakes-etc/essential-oil-knowledge-for-cat-owners-058072

Here is a list of some essential oils that are known to be toxic to cats:
• Peppermint
• Oregano
• Clove
• Sage
• Citrus oils
• Lavender
• Melaleuca (tea tree oil)
• Cinnamon (cassia)
• Wintergreen
• Thyme
• Birch
• Bergamot
• Pine
• Spruce
• Any other oils containing phenols

Does this mean Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood, etc are ok?

At this point, I am not using oils on my cat, but I do use them in my home.  It makes no sense to me because you see all kinds of products on the pet store shelves that contain "essential oils" and if they were toxic to cats then why are they in these products?

A frustrated oil and cat lover,

Arin

The reason no one has answered is possibly because we are not sure about the cats. I understand the phenols but we have no alcohol in our oils so that cannot be a problem. I do have a friend who uses the serenity on her high strung cat but really don't know much else. I do know that it is okay for horses and a moist towel with a drop of breathe or serenity would help in times of fire and/or anxiety. I know of a friend with hamsters who would freak out when the cat came up to the cage. Putting an open bottle of balance (small sample bottle) next to the cage kept the hamsters happy, but even more interesting is it kept the cat from jumping on the table.
You can muscle test your cats. Open a bottle of oil that you think might help them and see if the cat will come to you. I know this is hard because cats are known not to come when called. However if the cat will come to you, then chances are the oil is okay for them.

P.S.

I have been finding some research saying essential oils are toxic to cats. I have asked the everythingdoTERRA community their thoughts on this, but will no reply. Be careful using oils on your animals as they are smaller with a waaaay more powerful sense of smell than us, some vets say cats can't not metabolize the phenols and alcohols in some oils like we can so they can build up a toxicity. I guess just do some research before using oils on cats.

Yes! I used it on a dog last year in Santa Barbara.  I took a bandana and soaked in cold water (it was super hot outside) placed a drop of breathe and held it up to the dogs muzzle. It really helped. Also lavender or Serenity can help them calm down if it is making the animals anxious.

We are having a big fire here in Tehachapi.  Question:  Has anyone used Breathe on animals, dogs, cats or horses?  We've lost 40 homes and this is horse country.  Please let me know.  Thank you!
