that's also the belief of Maria Montessori - the creator of Montessori Pre-Schools

a child is a sponge for learning. We just need to guide them, and watch these little flowers blossom - at their own pace.

being a new mom, I watch my 2yo go thru this independent process of learning at her own pace on a daily basis. I'm very proud, and am amazed at how tiny these little humans are yet how strong their personalities and thirst for learning is.

Different kids start playing with puzzles at different ages, depending on when u hv introduced them and wht is their level of interest.

that's a really good approach too. ESPECIALLY if it works.

As a mom, I used to not encourage my 2 year old to work independently, but to have her in my lap, snuggling and kissing her as she turns the pieces of the puzzle from right to left until she figured it out with my support. After all she will have her whole life to be operating in the independent mode.

*I thought it was cute that you offer your child a hint on a puzzle
piece...I am so bad at doing puzzles that I wouldn't be able to give a hint!
*
*My daughter was probably more typical of kids. She did the 24 piece when
she was 4 or 5, started on the 100 piece at age 6. Now she is 13 and she
can easily do a 300 piece, and has difficulty doing a 500 piece. People buy
her 1000 piece puzzles and they are too hard to the pieces end up laying
around everywhere.*

oh my, that's amazing!! how did you teach her?? what are some of the techniques you've used to guide her and improve her speed?

My little Claire likes puzzle a lot! We started to do it since she was 2 years. By the time she's 2.5, she can finish 80 pieces of puzzle within 9 min... in this case, I just gave her the piece one by one and she will put it on its place without asking me.

I'm sure there are a number of programs out there and they are going to very
depending on the field and the age of the student. I am familiar with
one company called smartthinking.com. This company helped college students
with questions in a number of different fields. The "tutors" had graduate
degrees and were taught specifically not to hand out the answers. If an
online tutoring company gives out the answers to homework, the students
aren't learning, though students may prefer companies that just give them
the answers. The goal of the tutor in this situation is to help walk the
student through the information that they know. Basically lead them towards
the right answer.

We had live tutoring sessions where we would "chat" live with the students.
We also had a program where the students could submit questions. Since we
were not supposed to just hand out answers, the live sessions were much more
useful.

The quality of the company and each individual tutor is going to vary.

Does this help?

Hi, if it was up to me, I think I'd rather go with a live human tutor instead of a computer program....

What type of tutoring does she need? How old is your daughter? I have homeschooled and I have also worked as an online teacher in English & ESL/EFL.

Online tutoring programs can be live. I actually chatted/typed with live
students when they had problems with homework. Heather

Dear Sarika,

Does your daughter play alone in other circumstances? Is it about the ability of doing puzles or about the ability/habit of playing alone?

i have a daughter who will be 3 in february and we have started doing some 24 piece puzzles.  she likes to do them as long as i'm right in front of her telling her exactly where the pieces go!  or she'll take a 50 piece puzzle and ask me to do the whole thing whiel she watches me.  i was just wondering if your kids do puzzles, and at what age do they start doing them independently?  thanks!!

PLEASE try not to include any contact info apart from your email address within messages. Our policies also prohibit advertising within group messages, and this includes footers and signature lines that promote your product(s) or website - we do have a database on the group site where you can post your business information & contact info - that's only available to registered members.
