The first 48 hours after an injury, you should use nothing but ice.  Heat after that is ok.

doesn't heat aggravate inflammation, so if there is any internal
swelling a hot moist compress might make it worse?  I am asking
because my son just sprained his ankle and I wasn't sure if heat would
help or hinder?
