Before all of this, she would make herself physically sick (throwing up/crying inconsolably) whenever she had to be away (even in a different room) from us. We have overcome most of that, however, all of last year, in her preschool class, she did not talk (not even one word)--she can talk quite well, and she is very intelligent, she just chooses not to verbally communicate because she does not want to "draw attention" to herself. So far, in Kindergarten, it is looking the same way...she participates in class activities no problem, does her work, yet she will not verbally communicate. (The only "issue" that we have (besides not talking), is that she has that "anxiety barrier" of going into the school...once she is there, she is fine, but I have to hold her hand and pass her off to the teacher every day).
I have been using Serenity on her wrists and Balance on her neck each morning before she goes to school, but I don't know if it is helping or not. Her therapist is recommending that we should start thinking about going the "medication" route and putting her on anti-anxiety meds, because she is worried that her non-communication is going to start interfering with her school work and social atmosphere. I *really* do not want to go that route, because I honestly don't think that a 5 year old should be put on any sort of medicine of the like. It just hurts my heart to think of that!
So, my question (and pleading!) to you, is what are some other alternatives and recommendations that you would try for her anxiety--something that will make her feel more comfortable around her peers to be able to talk to them and to her teacher? Thanks.
