Oh yuck, I dread impetigo. I may be close to 30 years old, but I still get it once a year or so. The first time I got it, I wasn't even two, and my mom had a newborn. They thought they were going to have to put my arms in tubes to prevent me from scratching the sores. Eventually my grandparents had to take me for several days and they were able to get it under control.
Anyhow... over the years I figured out what works for me. The sores used to last a couple weeks, but now I can get them under control in a few days. It took me a while to clue in, but I was basically over-scrubbing and over-cleaning the sores and they just couldn't heal up and would spread.
Now, I find the sores, pop the fluid out of them (much like a zit, but it's all clear) and then scrub them once. My goal is to remove the top layer of skin so the sores can't close up and fill up again. Then I just let them air dry and not add anything. Last time I did put some geranium essential oil on it (burns!) but it didn't make a noticeable difference in the healing time. About 4 or 5 times the first day I visually inspect the site. If I see any more bumps, I try to pop those and remove the skin (like a pinhead's worth). Usually I bleed a little. Then I just dab the whole spot with a paper towel and let it dry. No more scrubbing. I also check to make sure the sore are scabbing, not refilling with the impetigo fluid. If I'm not sure, I'll pull off the scab.
Very important, washing my hands like crazy after touching it. I think my prime reason for continually contacting impetigo is from my bath towel. 99% of the time I get it in the right corner of my mouth. I think I somehow cut or scrape my mouth, take a shower, and instead of patting my face dry, I'll rub it dry... and what do ya know, a sore pops up 36 hours later.
Once I got the impetigo on my eyelid. I didn't realize what was happening at first until my eye was all swollen. I popped about a dozen sores, cleaned it with water and pat it dry with a paper towel. I didn't scrub it at all and the sores didn't fill back up again. That's when I realized I was overtreating my impetigo.
For the 3 year old, I would try cleaning the sores and then putting her outside in sunshine. The problem with any creams or such, they tend to block the sore and basically create a nice cave for more growth. Once it's fully dry and starting to scab, I might put something on, like an essential oil. Honestly, the antibacterial creams do NOTHING for my impetigo.
I hope this helps (even though I'm wanting to itch my face like crazy now) and I'll be happy to answer any questions.
Blessings,
Leah
