[Everything doTERRA] Re: cold/cough, sinus headache

Much to my dismay, this virus finally caught up with me as well. I'm coming out of it after 5 days.  I believe I'm going through the whole cycle of the virus just at a much faster pace than it takes without oils.  Other oilers I have talked to who have gone to the doc after 2 weeks of the battle were sent home told they were doing the best things possible.  Please do not take that to mean you shouldn't see your doctor.  If you feel you should see your doctor, you should go.  I sort of have a 5 day time frame in my mind- if I don't see turn around within 5 days- (meaning signs of getting better, not worse), I may consider a visit to the doctor.  With babies and young children or the elderly, that would be different and you should judge accordingly. Again, that's my time frame, not yours. If you are ill and feel you should go to the doctor you should go.

Besides catching the cold myself, I have also been working with all of my children over the past few months to help them either not get the virus, or conquer it.  Here is what I have found.

First, it comes on pretty fast, almost without warning and it is one of the tougher viruses I've dealt with, last year's were not as strong or persistent as this one.  We need to fight back just as hard, and just as fast. For some this virus starts with a sore throat and feeling tired, for others a mild headache or fever then it turns into all sorts of other gunk.

It is so important to get your sleep, reduce sugar intake (people tend to get sick after holidays- super bowl, etc. due to lots of people with germs, poor eating, poor exercise, poor sleep).  Lack of sleep was the last straw for my immune system and that's when I caught the bug.

In our family, as soon as we feel that little hint of un-wellness we start on a 2 hour oil regimen.  If we don't, we wish we had. Viruses seem to multiply at about a 2 hour rate- I've noticed that we start to feel yucky again about every 2 hours, so stay on top of or ahead of that. To some what we do may seem excessive, but I've done this 5 times now this year, one of them I didn't get on the ball until about 5 days into the virus and it took so much longer to turn him around- the spinal treatment was key.

A 2 hour regimen to us looks like this:

We gargle and swallow 1 drop Oregano and 1 drop On Guard in about 1-2oz water (the On Guard actually seems to help tone down the Oregano) about 3 times a day.  We do capsules and/or application to the spine chest, throat, and feet every 2 hours for 36 hours.  It's hard to get that frequency at night, so get lots in during day.  If you rotate between a capsule and an application it may be easier on the tummy.

We do one of Boyd Truman's Symphony of the Cells simple 15 min spinal treatments- usually the Respiratory one- which seems to be a key factor in getting this illness to turn and run away.  Then we stay on the capsules after the 36 hours, 2-3 times a day for several days after we feel completely better (just like you would an anti-biotic).  Just because you feel better doesn't mean it's completely out of your system.  Do not over extend yourself.  Your body needs plenty of rest.  This virus comes back, and with a vengeance if you are not oiling day and night. If this is a lesson I could learn, it would be to not skip a single day of some type of oils on the spine and feet daily.  That goes a long way towards prevention.

We use Connie Boucher's Super Defense blend  to which I also add Melissa, Melalueca, and black pepper.  I think Melissa is a big boost in fighting this virus.  I put this blend in a roller bottle with FCO and put on my healthy children's spine and feet morning and night and put on the sick kids throughout the day (every 2 hours). We take the concentrated bottle we made of the blend and put about 6 drops in a capsule for the sick ones 2-3 times a day for several days after they are well.

For my husband who really doesn't want to catch it, he takes a capsule as a preventative measure morning and night.  This so far has proven effective for both him and my mom who has been trying to stay healthy so she could help my 2 sisters with new baby's and c-sections.

If we don't have all the oils to make our own Super Defense Blend we use 5 drops On Guard, 4 Drops Oregano, 3 drops melalueca, 1-2 drops lemon, 1 drop frankincense in a capsule instead. I would probably decrease the On Guard or Oregano and add a drop of Melisa too. I am aware we will have to back off the Oregano and give the body a break- so it will be omitted from the capsules at some point and lemon will be increased.

The GX Assist is very similar to this capsule, and is another option, though I don't know the quantity of oils in it. We are all on Vitamins and Supplements and I believe that helps support the immune system.

My kids are usually willing to drink hot chocolate with 1 drop On Guard, so that's another choice for those little ones who can't swallow a capsule.
One of my children started to develop an sensitivity to the amount of oil we were dumping in him/on him.  He is generally more sensitive to things anyway.  His skin would start to turn red and itchy.  We backed off a bit with him, be he is also the one who gets Asthma with a cold and was having attacks every 2 hours without oil treatments, so we knew we had to persist, have him drink lots of water and use FCO.  For the breathing we did 2 drops frank, 2 drops peppermint rubbed in hands, on chest and spine and then inhaled deeply just like you would an inhaler every 2 hours- We back off this just like an inhaler after 2 days and symptoms are calming, by decreasing to every 4 hours, then 6, etc.. (cup one hand and make the other into an open fist forming a tube.  place on top of cupped hand and inhale deeply.  Hold and swallow-don't exhale it all out.)

My other child gets sinus issues, so we use DigestZen and Breathe on the bridge of the nose and under the eyes with the eyes closed.  Avoid contact with the eyes. My youngest are unable to take capsules, so we do a lot of oiling, some hot chocolate with On Guard, and sometimes I can get them to gargle if I shoot it in with a syringe.  I also would consider adding in a homeopathic cold remedy such as ColdCalm or Oscillicarnicum (I am completely unsure about that spelling and threw out the box.)

For myself, I've also done warm compresses on the chest with cold pressed castor oil, and I pick one or two of my favorite EO's for cough and congestion- Breathe, Lemon, Myrrh, Digestzen, Eucalyptus, Peppermint,  Black Pepper, etc.

That is about it.  Good luck to you, be frequent, consistent and persistent.

Hello everyone.

Okay, after much denial that I was getting sick, I got the cold/congestion/cough thing that is going around.  It has been almost 3 weeks and I am still feeling weary from it.  One day I'm good the next day I'm down again.  The cough seems to be getting less, but today I woke up with a sinus headache, sneezing and feeling like I just want to sleep all day.

Any suggestions on what oils I should use at this point?  I need this to be OVER!

Thanks much.
