I am a psychotherapist and can say that it's very true that memories are highly linked to scents and smells. If your goal is to beat it, you might try pairing the scents with something good to try and link it to a better memory. I would suggest something powerful and/or memorable if possible (e.g. A fun event). Otherwise, you might try mixing the "bad" scents into others that might be more neutral to create a new scent. Hope things go better for you this year.
