[Everything doTERRA] Re: Anxiety and depression in children.

So sorry I am just now replying...  I need to get on here more often.  What I did in terms of my SAD is that I went to an alternative Dr.  She specializes in alternatives methods (also reg meds too).  I was so tired of trying different antidepressants. So many side effects for me.  Some people love them. But I wonder if they truly have tried a natural way.  I live in Indiana...  so not near the NW! :)

So... when I went to my Dr.  she did a rather extensive blood work up on me.  Turns out I am EXTREMELY low on vit. D.  That is part of the problem .  I have to say I learned a lot by this blood test and my Dr. does this blood test on all her patients once a year and more if needed.  So here goes my regimen.

1.  I use a GNC product called Lumiday. (4) It is packed full of various stuff...  one of which is 5-HTP
2. whole food supplment  (2)
3. 10,000 IU of Vit D (2)
4. Fish oil 3000mg (From what I understand fish oil is very important in general but especially for people who are stressful or depressed.  The stress of depression on your brain can be damaging. So omegas are important) I take a pretty high dose. (2 X 1500 mg. pills)
5. Lavender tablet at night
6. I use the a variety of the oils....  Whisper works nicely for me. It has vetiver and bergamot among many other oils that I think help in particular. I put it in a roller ball and use on my wrists 3 times a day.
7. I also use the serentiy and the elevation... especially when I get out of the shower! I rub all up and down my arms.
8.  I put the elevation in an inhaler and that seems to work really well.
9. Peppermint or Breathe is rather uplifting for me too....

I only suggest doing this after talking to a Dr.  She and I came up with this plan based on what my blood work needed. I add the oils on top and she is aware of what I take. This is my full strength that is getting me through the winter.  I will tone it down a bit in the summer as I am a huge gardener and spend a lot of time outside. I have to say that this regimen has been the difference between feeling like I "ok" and feeling "good".  I have my energy back and my temper is under control.  My anxiety is almost non-existent.

So many people say that SAD is a made up thing...  but I am here to tell you that it is very real.  It had such huge grip on me for years.  It is nice to finally feel good and productive in the winter.  Chemical jail is no way to spend your life if you do not need too.  the way I am dealing is rather expensive.  But it is worth it to me and my family. I am a mother of 2 girls and wife to an awesome husband.  They deserve to have me healthy too!!  :)

Hope this helps.

Hello and welcome!

My son is seven and has a lot of anxiety, sensory processing problems, and well... other things. I think you had a good recommendation.

A couple of weeks ago he was actually in tears at bedtime because he was thinking about the bad dreams he's been having lately.

I recently got bergamont for him for the first time. I told him that I had an idea for a "good dreams" oil mix and would he like to give it a try. I threw together bergamont along with some vetiver and some marjoram. (When I was thinking about this earlier I had seen many people say that marjoram helped them sleep, and a few people it helped them stop having bad dreams.) His younger brother and I used it it too, and we slept great that night! I put it on his big toe. Now he asks me to "put it ALL OVER his foot". Considering he still doesn't want oil on him unless he deems it to be for a very good reason, I'd say it's working for him. I often also diffuse it during the night, if I'm not feeling like I need to be diffusing something else.

I'd like to add that I think it's great if we can give our kids some choices of possible good oils, and let them be involved in thinking about what they like and deciding what to mix together. Perhaps they could even decide if they would like to use a roller bottle or a spray bottle and where they would like to put it. I think that things like this are very empowering for them (just like it is for us. :) )

I would love to hear more about what's working for your depression and SAD. I have had some friends ask me about SAD specifically. You wouldn't happen to be in the Northwest with me, would you???
