I have a son who is on the spectrum and I have been contemplating this diet as well. It will be very hard because like your friend's son, my son is a picky eater, but way overeats on the things he wants. He's sensitive to lots of textures, but if it is soft and creamy-he knows no end. I have a few friends who have children with autism who attend the same school my Sam does. They have done the grueling diet, through some of the top doctors in the field and have had great success. One mom in particular, her son now at 8 years old is doing fantastically well with his developmental things, but is now back on a regular diet because his gut was healed. I don't know if anything can completely cure autism, there are so many factors involved and still too many unknowns. For my son, he actually has xxyy syndrome, but within that has characteristics and delays that place him on the spectrum. This could change, it could not. I don't see anything wrong with trying it all. I am a total oil freak and use it for everything, but honestly, I have not seen them help him with his delays or behavior issues as I had hoped. It may be something that will take a lot of time before I see the effects, but I keep using them. I believe in them, but I think they are just one of many tools. For us, we have found that meeting his sensory needs through a program called Floortime has been an amazing tool! It allows them to meet their needs through play and direct interaction with the caregiver. I also believe that diets can be a huge help sometimes and am currently researching enough before I start, but will most likely give it a try.
