To me, when I do this I feel it's a good thing as long as it is tolerable. For me, the burning sensation does no harm or damage to any of the tissue and is indicative of the oils and the hot compress working to drive them deeper (along with the peppermint) into the joint in order to achieve the desired result.
The coconut oil is a good suggestion.
