Shannon, if she can get her blood sugars down by stopping the white stuff; rice, pasta, potatoes, sugar, then I think the oils will work better. Sugar free items in the grocery department are not friendly to a person who has high BGs. The white flour raises BGs and artificial sweeteners are not good.
Metformin is not a "bad" drug; in fact, it's being studied for it's potential anti cancer benefit. If your friend would like a good diabetes group, I can recommend one. We are proactive about controlling our diabetes, not having it control us.
