If he wants something sweet to drink, I really like Vitacoco coconut water.  It has only the naturally occurring sugar and wonderful electrolytes.  Soda is terrible for you all around.  If he must have carbonation, have him put an essential oil in carbonated water.  That way, it's sparkling, has flavor, and reasonably good for him.  I've never tried it, but I assume if they taste good in water, sparkling water would be good too.  I think the best option is finding him an alternative to drink vs regular or diet soda.  In my opinion, diet sodas are worse for you for all the reasons everyone else has mentioned.

This totally made me laugh. I remember once when I was pregnant years and years ago I wanted salsa really bad. I knew it would make me super sick though. So in my brain I figured that ginger ale or 7-Up would settle my stomach, right?! It was like a volcano in there. I can remember being so sick I thought I was going to die. However I still think it was sound logic. :-)
