I'll disagree about whole wheat, as it's a misnomer. As you noted, most aren't "whole wheat" anyway, they're just fancy white flour and sugars, unless you buy a sprouted bread like Ezekiel. It's best to avoid gluten completely. Luckily these days there are many options for gluten-free pastas and breads. DeBoles pasta is cheap at Walmart, but you're right about the exorbitant cost of eating gluten-free.
Stevia is the only truly non-glycemic sweetener out there that's safe. (Aspertame is a toxin, btw, and not safe for human consumption.) It's derived from a plant, and sweeter than sugar so you don't need as much, but you can cook with it. Anyone fighting candida should be using that, and making those other lifestyle changes since caffeine and nicotine also feed the yeast. Don't buy products like Truvia or PureVia, which have erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and isomaltulose (a fructose-based dissacheride, or sugar) added to them. Buy only a pure stevia without additives.
If anyone wants to know more, either go to the link I sent earlier and read, or email me privately. I'm willing to help anyone since I know how difficult this is to deal with, and how hard it is to eliminate. But it doesn't take a harsh diet that's so limited you can't enjoy life for several months.

I am lucky to see a doctor who tells me my options in traditional medicine (i.e. Rx) and natural options. She said that what she has had the best success with is this diet: no sugars, no artificial sweeteners, no white flour, no white rice, no white potatoes, no high sugar fruits like bananas, watermelons, etc. You also need to add a probiotic and a good multivitamin (which doterrra has).
Things that are ok... corn tortillas, corn, whole wheat and brown rice pastas, brown rice, beans, quinoa, etc. It takes a lot of experimenting to find things that you can stand.
While many candida diets eliminate a lot more she says that most people can't stay on them so this is one that her patients have had the most success with. I have had a lot of success with it, each time I get my blood work the number is lower and no question I feel a lot better!
I'll warn you that the first time you go into the grocery store it will be a shock. 90% of things that say whole wheat just have trace amounts and almost everything has a form of sugar in it (molassas, honey, corn syrup). My first time I spent an hour and a half in there and came out with one bag of $30 worth of groceries and a shocked look on my face.
The only allowed sweetener is stevia. I prefer NuStevia by NuNaturals. I've tried several brands and it is the only one that doesn't taste bitter to me. Thought I'd share that and save you the 100s of dollars it cost me to find it.

I want to add to this that nothing will get rid of candida albicans if it's still being fed. Refined sugars, caffeine, nicotine, and potatoes (pure starch, same as a sugar), and gluten aren't eliminated from the diet.
This is a very invasive condition that doesn't have a simple cure. For more information, check out this link: http://www.holistichelp.net/candida.html
