Sounds like it could be a language processing problem or dyslexia. Dyslexia is a condition that needs a specialized instruction. Children with dyslexia typically have average or most likely above average I.Q.s Often it can present like ADD/HD or have Add or the HD part along with it. If this is what he has he needs to find a certified Orton-Gillingham instructor, like myself. You can go to http://www.ortonacademy.org/ to find a certified instructor in your area. Be careful tho - there are a lot of counterfeit people claiming to be Orton-Gillingham. Unless they are certified through the real entity -- the Academy of Orton Gillingham, in N.Y. you will be wasting your time and money. You can call the Academy too and they will help you find a tutor. Tutor's can do testing also. If you want to know for sure there are some psychologist and neuropsychologists who will diagnose dyslexia. Many of them do not though. If you are in Columbus, Dr. Steven Guy is THE BEST!!!!!! Get a prescription from your pediatrician first and you may be then able to get insurance to cover. Also the international dyslexia association may be able to help you find who in your area can diagnose dyslexia for you. With this instruction - the child WILL REMEDIATE COMPLETELY 90 percent of the time, unless there is an I.Q problem.
From an oil perspective - Rosemary helps me immensely with focus issues. Whisper and patchouli also helps! Nothing will help though except the right instruction if it is language processing problems, which is sounds like it is. Best wishes!! Andrea

It's not an oil but maybe he wasn't taught the rules (ours is probably one ofthe most difficult to read/spell with as there's little consistency with "rules") or just not in a way he could grasp as firmly. There's a website called All About Learning that has both reading and spelling programs that may explain things better. We homeschool and plan to explore this program.
i've also used bergamot on my 5yo, back of the neck, to help with attention/focus. she had her best archery score that time :)
