[Everything doTERRA] Re: complaint re: animals

Very well said and appreciate the time you took to detail out these facts. Much appreciated!

I too would like to know who "suggested" the formula for her cat.

Cats, unlike other mammals, lack a particular liver enzyme that is
responsible for metabolizing many substances in particular lipophilic
constituents of essential oils. This causes a buildup or toxicity in
their system.

Cat owners should be aware that cats are extremely sensitive not only
to essential oils, but all chemicals whether natural or synthetic.
This is why vets don't always treat cats with the same medications
they may recommend for a dog with the same ailment. Cats have to be
treated differently.

We essential oil users know how powerful essential oils are due to the
concentration. When teaching my pet classes, I strongly encourage cat
owners to gain a greater understanding of the power of using oils
aromatically and always provide cats an escape so they can decide when
they've had enough. When you apply an oil topically, the cat cannot
retreat when the dosage is too high.

As Pat said, the animal will let you know if the oil agrees with them.
I don't even open the bottle when presenting to my dog. The smells are
so strong to animals. They will turn away from or gravitate to an
unopened bottle.

Modern Essentials only calls out melaleuca, but citruses (high
Limonene), pines/firs (high pinene) and the hotter oils -- thyme ct
thymol, oregano, cinnamon, clove, etc. (high phenols) are typically
called out as oils that should be avoided with cats.

I hope this experience does not turn her off to oils in general or
dōTERRA in particular. I hope she comes out on the other side
understanding that the oils are powerful and because of that they
should not be used casually. Education is the key and getting
permission from our pets is of paramount importance.

Oregano was suggested to and that also is not good either. Haven't blogged this yet but I intend to. Misinformation is a hazard and so many raves about doTERRA it should also be known about any drawbacks."
