when your body feels you are starving yourself  it stores fat,  I have had the same thing happen,  I have had friends and family tell me I am eating to much, when my daughter tells me I eat like a bird and gained weight.   try eating a small meal 4-5 times through out the day so your body does not feel you are starving it...............  diane

Ladies,

Eating right is not hard, it's a matter of priorities and taking the time to change certain foods and habits.

I love what I do, because I get to help lots of families understand the tools and benefits of eating healthy. I understand the economy can be overwhelming, or cause anxiety, but I a finding most women I talk with are making changes NOW to save LATER. Most women I am talking with are taking charge of their families health and saying, "No more illness!" "No more fake foods in this house!"

If you are eating crap (cookies; chips; crackers; white rice, pasta, bread; too much diary; junk food; fast food; etc) you will find you are gaining weight and wasting money. Would you walk over to the trash can and toss a $20 bill? Then don't do it at the grocery store!!! Those foods do not have the nutrients your body needs. They make you hungry an hour later, hence, you will be eating more often! And what will you eat? More of the fake foods!

Some say "I can't afford to eat healthy" I don't buy it!
They are also the moms who go to Starbucks 3-5 times a week, or get a manicure every week, or go on big trips every couple months, or get highlights put in their hair every 6 weeks, or eat out twice a week. PRIORITIES!!! I like those things too, but what is MOST important to you?

As moms we say, all I want is for my kids to be happy and healthy. Well, do you? Do you really? It starts with what you FEED THEM. They learn from us. They will eat what we teach them to eat. They will eat what we buy.

Good rule of thumb ~ if it comes in a box, it is fake food. Don't eat it! SHOP the perimeter of the grocery store. That is where the REAL food is. The more you shop in the inside, the more "filler food" you are buying - which again, is a waste of your money.

Put your money where it counts. If you eat well NOW, you will save money LATER (soon!) on over the counter meds, dr. visits, missing school & missing work, and feeling sick. No one likes being sick, but what are you doing to prevent it?

You have to tip that scale with more fruits & veggies, because that is what combats illness & disease. Those are the foods that have antioxidants - not your meat, not your crackers, not your pasta, and certainly not your drive thru chemical meals.

Your children will grow better, think better, behave better, eat better, ALL because you are FEEDING them better!

Try it! You'll be pleasantly surprised! If you would like to talk more about this or about portion control or many other parts that go along with this, please email me and I would be glad to answer your questions. (This reply is already really long!)

I have heard this plenty of times, but I still need to be reminded!

1. Don't go grocery shopping on an empty stomach;
2. Don't buy junk food, sweets, sodas, bread, or whatever you don't want to include in your diet, so there are no temptations at home!
3. Keep healthy snacks at hand, i.e. sliced fruit and veggies, low sugar drinks.

Your body still needs the carbs, especially if you are exercising, so use the whole wheat kind, the brown rice.  Baby steps is the way to go, but don't neglect to set goals (half a mile this week, one mile next... you get the idea).  Exercise and fresh air will improve your mood too.  All the best, T

Just make a decision that you will try to be conscious of what you eat and you can't possibly get rid of it all but if you start evaluating how you feel after you eat something or how much of it you eat and write it down. I love glazed doughnuts but you know what? After I eat them, for some reason, I get heartburn. Not all, just certain one's. I guess it's in the ingredients in each place that makes them. I actually write down somethnig like felt queezy, felt stuffed, too filling, could have eaten half and been satisfied. Keep a small 50 cent notebook in your purse. I still eat a glazed doughnut on occasion, just not the ones that affect me or I only eat half a bagel or very little pineapple.

Go at your pace even if you don't keep track everyday, "Baby Steps". I hope this helps, I'm 52 and have 4 grown boys and grandkids and still learning from all the young moms here!

my mother was telling me one day that her friend used to starve herself too loose weight.. what happened then is her body went in preservation mode and instead of getting ride of things in ur waist u keep them for 'storag' the next time u dont eat.. so if u go hungry ur body may be doing all it can to keep some 'fat' for the next time so ull still have energy..

My son was diagnosed with H1N1 on 10/19 (had been sick with it since 10/16)
They do a nose swab and test for FluA and FluB
FluB is the seasonal flu
FluA is "other flu" Bird, Swine, Etc.
His doctor told me that they are not doing blood tests on everyone that tests positive for FluA (only in extreme cases) but she also said right now, the only strain of FluA out there is H1N1. That's how people are being diagnosed without the whole, expensive testing.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately flu is prevalent in specific areas but H1N1 is noted in all states.

When my daughter was ages 2-22, her M.O. was a slight "achem" and a sniffle to a full blown sinus infection with a secondary bronchitis or pneumonia within 24 hours.  She was hospitalized every year with these diagnoses.  At 2 she had surgery for tonsils and adenoids and drainage tubes in her ears and at 7 she had surgery to clean out the blockages that were the receptacles of the infections in her sinuses and her adenoids had grown back twice as big as they were at age 2.

At 10 she had an almost lethal mononucleosis and that was her last hospitalization but she had lots and lots and lot of recurring upper respiratory illnesses.

Last year at age 22, she flew to San Francisco for Spring Break and within 24 hours of leaving home, she had a fever of 104 and was in ER.  We had to fly to Oakland, rent a car and drive to S.F. to drive her home as she was too sick to fly.

She just had another surgery that we hope will keep her healthy for a while anyway.  Now that she is uninsured, we can only hope and pray that she will be able to catch any infections very early so they don't escalate.

We have a ridiculous amount of experience with flu like, actual flu and secondary upper respiratory experience and with her history, I have been watching, learning and reading very carefully about season flu and H1N1.

The difference between flu and H1N1, this has more pronounced symptoms and moves much more quickly from a small cough-cough and a sniffle to a high fever and big trouble.  Generally a flu fever will start at the 100 mark and not get beyond 102 and the coughing and nasal congestion will remain constant but a steady use of tissues and Tylenol for the pains and fever will do the trick.

With H1N1, the fever starts about the same but within a few short hours it is 102 and above and the congestion escalates just as quickly which is why immediate physician or PA care need be obtained well within the first 24 hours of extreme symptoms.

This thing moves into critical pneumonia faster than anyone expected which is where the deaths are coming from.  Healthy kids are the victims and adults with pre existing conditions are as well which is why the vaccine is geared to those groups initially.

Flu needs no physician or PA intervention unless it lingers beyond 4 days and there are other issues such as excessive vomiting (usually from swallowing phlegm) or head pain that may indicate a secondary sinus infection that could be bacterial not viral.

I have not heard that seasonal flu evolves into H1N1.  They are distinct and succinct viruses.

Regardless, flu is never to be taken lightly.

With the swine flu outbreak you would think teachers would see a child that is sick. I picked my 6 year old daughter up Friday. She was falling asleep in the car. thats unusuall for her. I took her to the doctors, she tested positive for the flu. Here's the funny thing I asked the doctor if it was the swine flu, she said I couldn't really tell you. I asked why? She said medicad doesn't cover the testing if you want to spend $350.00 on the test we will send it off to find out.My question is how does everyone who has the swine flu know thats what it is, did they spend the money to find out no matter what insurance they are on?

Kathy in Carmel Valley, CA - I've heard 'get the shot' from about 97% of the people I ask. I have some bug right now and after 5 days of not getting better, I'm going to see the doctor today. I still don't know the difference between flus but whatever I have, it's yucky. Still undecided about getting the shot as I have been diagnosed w/Epstein Barre and 'heard' the shot might be disadvantageous. Another question for the doc today:) Take care, everyone.

I find it interesting that you say "Lots of health care providers are not getting the shot". Especially because I work in healthcare and I know that most of the UCDavis Campus has received the shot as well as the Kaiser personnel in Sacramento. I'm not sure where this information is coming form but all the information the health care community is receiving states get the shot, not necessarily for your health benefit but to stop the spread...this is a Pandemic. Stop it's spread to those who are most affected the kids...

Hello I am pretty new, I am a 34 yr old mother of 7 year old twin girls, married and live in Western Kentucky..

I read a study that showed only 50% of children showed good resistance to the swine flu shot, and the CDC said that 99% of people will be fine if they get the swine flu, I am worried on both sides, I dont want me or my children to be in the 1% but there has been very little data the I could find about the trial results on children.  I am tore, it concerns me because of the rush and the fact they are using companies that have made MAJOR mistakes in the past, and the fact that people are going to profit so much from this.  If I could see some real data on the trials I would feel better, but we all know that there is a chance of having bad side affects from a vaccine.  So any advise would be welcomed its a roll of the dice in my book, I know my chances of having complication from the swine flu 1% but I dont know my chances of having complications from the vaccine.
Hope everyone has a great day we are in for some major rain and its very cloudy and gloomy here in Kentucky.

So she has no regrets about leaving them alone. She was worried about her food stamps and purse. There is something seriously wrong with this picture. No. Something seriously wrong with the mother.

Put her in the prison general population. They'll take care of her.

Re: Schools not  noticing sick children/My Flu Experience

Posted by: "wildirishrose01us" irishrose@fiber.net   wildirishrose01us

Wed Oct 28, 2009 7:57 am (PDT)

I think the schools are so overwhelmed that they don't notice such things. My son is a teacher, and he is so overworked and underpaid that he can't keep an eye on the students health.

I wasn't at work for two weeks. It started with the swab H1N1. Nothing. Thank goodness. I'd been playing with my 1 week old grandaughter the night before (I'd felt perfectly fine that night) and my 1 year old grandaughter the day before. My grandbabies was the only reason that sent me to the Dr. If not I would have stayed home and just been sick. My babies didn't get sick, thank goodness.

I got sicker and sicker. I went to the Dr. again. She insisted I only had the flu. She did put me on the xithra, or something like it, pack. Still didn't better. I got worse. I was worried about missing so much work. To say the least some of my of co-workers are not especially nice. If they have to do your work, they make sure you know how put out they were. I went back to work last Tuesday. My co-workers were very rude. I had work shoved in my hands and face the minute I walked in. I had to go downstairs and my other co-workers said that I looked terrible and go home. My supervisor found me, hauled me upstairs, turned off my computer herself, scooped up my work, said to my "co-workers" that she'd get someone else to do my work. She then told me to get my butt home and get to the Dr. that day.

So I did. I got a different Dr. this time. He was wonderful. He looked me over thoroughly, including x-rays, and told me I had punomnia <spelling> He gave me amoxillan and told me to stay home and come back in a few days. I did. I saw the nurse practioner, she's wonderful, was told that I wasn't getting better, and I should be on two antibiotics, so she gave me more. Told me to get to the ER if my breathing got worse. Of course it did.

Sunday I went to the ER. The waiting room was seperated by a curtin. One side had about 7 people with masks on, including me, the other side was the usual emergencies. I was there 4 hours. Had breathing treatment, more x-rays, was told it had turned into bronchitas, with asthma to add to the mess. I got an inhaler, some steriods, and another kind of cough syrup.

The steriods kicked in that night, the breathing treatment was very helpful, the inhaler was used, finishing up the rest of the antibiotics. The cough syrup is nasty, but it works. Best of all I'm not contagious. I can see my babies.

I went to work on Monday. I was still a bit wheezy, but ok. The lady that took over my work was wonderful. She'd sent me a get well card, which was very sweet. She hadn't complained once. A welcome change.

Dr. visits 4 times. ER visit 1 time. A combination of 7 medicines. Insurance is going to have a fit with all these vists and medicines. Everything else is MasterCard. Not really, for that, but it reminds me of that commercial. LOL. But I'm finally better.

And that's been my two weeks.

She said medicad doesn't cover the testing if you want to spend $350.00 on the test we will send it off to find out.My question is how does everyone who has the swine flu know thats what it is, did they spend the money to find out no matter what insurance they are on?

hi Sharyn, my condolences to you in regards to your husband (I've lost friends and family to the cancer beast)...........and I applaud you for taking on this single-mom journey. It's a challenging one, sometimes makes you wanna rip your hair out, but ALWAYS rewarding in the end!

My friend is starting a non-profit to help single parents - for anyone in the group who's interested. She's in Chicago, and hopes her organization grows nationwide with enough support, and then worldwide............ so if anyone's interested for themselves, or would be kind enough to spread word to any single parents they know ----- we can help make this generous organization grow!

Thanks for everyone's time!!! Happy holidays!

Hi, I am Sharyn and I also live in CA - Northern. I have a ten year old special needs child. Unfortunately, I am a recent widow - my husband died of cancer earlier this year. So, I am struggling with this single parent stuff.

Hi Sharyn, my name is Sheri, I too am a Special Needs mom. My six year old son, Dillan, was born with Spina Bifida. He is in the first grade, doing well. You did not mention what the Special Need was that your ten year old has, but if you ever need to talk, I'm here.

Wow, that's GREAT advice, especially about the card list.

Can anyone advise: is it a good idea to include something thoughtful into a card, like a $2 lottery ticket, to brighten the recipient's day and make your card a bit more thoughtful and a bit less forgotten?

Always nice to put a smile on the face of someone meaningful to you. I just wonder what I can include in the card besides a lotto ticket that would not break my pocket, the way a gift card would.

Thanks for your advice!
Happy upcoming holidays....

My DH cooks
I clean. I drink the wine , only time of year! (so I can stay sane) We have lots of his family over.
We are bad about last minute shopping (but I did get a part time job at Kohls, should be great for the gift buying discounts)
Christmas cards only go out to last year friends and family and any new people I meet along the way.
So if someone forgets me last year they have been removed from the card list.
House clean up huge this time of year, I remove everything from every room and start fresh in each room. This way the thrift stores get my old stuff and those that shop there get some good gifts.

I have always put a mini candy cane in my xmas cards. I realize that by the
time they get to where they're going they're probably broken, but I've
always believed it's the thought that counts. They usually run about 99cent
for a box of 50 or so, the rest we put on the tree as decorations.

Happy Holidays in advance

Good Morning ladies,my name is Karen,I have a 1 year old son,his name is Frankie. We have been having a problem with sleepless nights.Last night everything was going great,we had dinner, his bath then Frankie fell asleep, not an hour later he woke up screaming,I thought maybe he was having a nightmear,so I cuddled him until he fell back to sleep,a half hour later he woke up again this time it was a lot worse. The time is 8:30pm well he was up screaming until 3:30 this morning.I don't know if it was a nightmear,a stomacheache,or teething. I tried everything I know to figure out what the problem was with no luck. If anyone has any suggestions to help my little man & I get some sleep I would be completely greatful.HELP mom can't go with no sleep for much longer

Hi Karen, I have 16 month old twins who are great sleepers most of the time. Is your son a good sleeper most nights? One night one of my girls went to bed okay and woke up shortly after screaming her head off. This went on for hours so we took her to the emergency room bc she seemed like she was in pain. It turned out that she had an ear infection! She had no symptoms, ie pulling of the ear or fever. Our dr said that if a baby is sleeping ok and suddenly wakes up screaming 9 times out of 10 it is an ear infection. Maybe have him looked at. Also if they are crying bc they don't want to go to sleep, I give them a little book to look at in their crib. This usually tires their eyes out. I hope some if this helps.

I know this is my fault but I don't know how to cook healthy.. PLEASE HELP!! and then this, my son has asthma, and right now he is taking a neb treatment, ,school sent a notice that they are giving the h1n1 vac, don't know bout' that either, everything is so confusing... Well i have to say the cholesterol meds are some of the worst to be on...take garlic and try homeopathic ways first!...a walk around the block or 3 or 4 is much better for you!...and if my child also would not let him take H1N1 shot! give vitamins multi and C and airborne is goos also...if resistance is down!...and teach to wash hands alot boys are the worst for that!...google for info on puter!!!!knowledge is POWER!...and you can go to foodnetwork .com and put in what ur r looking for and get lots of recipes!
Good Luck!
