tract issues... many neutered male cats experience issues as they get
older from their early neutering... so have him checked for a UTI is a
good first step. Unlike humans, cats can go a long time with low
levels of uti that don't progress to worse, but irritate them so they
pee to try to get rid of the irritation...

Also, many cat professionals will suggest having enough litter boxes
in the home: one for each cat plus one extra - so if you have 2 cats,
you need 3 boxes... and to scoop daily if not multiple times daily to
make sure each cat has their "own" box... they generally don't like to
share, and even if they have in the past, they can grow up to an age
where they no longer want to.

there is another product on the market called "Feliway" that is a cat
pheromone, that you diffuse in your home and it helps to calm the
cats, in case he's developed some anxiety...

hope that helps - we have one cat that never used a litter box -- he
lives outside now... which is not ideal, but the only solution.

good luck!

So, is there something I should be doing to stop him from marking his
territory?  We've had him about 3 years--got both boys at the same time
from a rescue shelter.  He didn't do this the first two years we had
him--it's been more in recent months.  I've not changed their litter--I'm
very careful to always use the same brand.  I use the "World's Best Cat
Litter" that is made of corn--it can be flushed and it's all natural and
it's not dusty.  It's really a great product.  Is there something else I
could be doing wrong?

I don't have TerraShield yet, but I plan to get it on my very next order.
Is there anything else I can do to deter him from scratching or peeing
where he shouldn't?

And Pat--the only two I've heard are toxic are the tea tree oil (sorry, I
can't remember how to spell the m word) and wintergreen--are there any
others confirmed to be toxic to cats?  I was so tempted to use oils on my
kitty last night--he seems to have a cold or allergies.  I decided to wait
it out a few days and see if he gets better on his own.  Can't afford vet
fees.  I'm such a bad mommy.

Thanks so much!  I appreciate the help and advice!
