Re: [Everything doTERRA] Re: Grapefruit and Slim & Sassy interactions with prescribed medications

well the savings for me is pretty trivial since i only pay $4 a month... but grapefruit is compounding for me so even if i went to every other day it would make my levels dangerous on the days i do take it. i did far more research into this than the average patient. as i was reluctant to go on meds in the first place.. i started slim and sassy forgetting there was grapefruit in it and also thinking that it was in it and such a small amount shouldn't affect me. but commercially when they make grapefruit juice they juice the whole fruit they don't peel it. so with that knowledge you can't say for sure where the problem lies... grapefruits (and all citrus to a lessor degree) have the ability to turn off an enzyme that occurs in our stomachs ( CYP3A4 ) and this enzyme is solely responsible for oxidation of certain medications.. most medications are oxidized in the stomach and metabolized by 90% in the stomach so if this enzyme is turned off 100% of the medication is hitting the blood stream.. instead of 10% normally that is a HUGE increase. BUT the properties from the grapefruit have to hit the stomach directly where this enzyme is produced in order to turn it off... so if its not ingested it won't affect the medication..  another thing grapefruit does which also MY particular medication does is inhibit the production of a protien in the intestines which is there to help metabolize certain things including meds.. so with both those turned off this increases the medication saturation in the body exponentially.

so that said, i started taking slim in sassy to help with cravings and hunger. which worked but after about 2 weeks i couldn't figure out why i was haivng such crazy ass symptoms and reactions... i thought something had gone array with my medication. i was having horrible nightmares, insane depression, my heart was slowing so much i was barely functioning.. and a few others i can't remember now and was ready to call my doc freaking out when i decided to stop all other vitamins and supplements. when i went to grab  my slim and sassy to drink, i stopped since i remembered no supplements and looked at the label and then i remembered the grapefruit... and smacked myself up side the head. the next day all my vitamins back, switched to lemon to help cleanse my liver of the excess medication and with in 2 days i was back to normal.. only thing changed was the slim and sassy..

i chose to end the slim and sassy since me being on this heart medicine is supposed to be temporary anyway.. i just am finding other ways to lose weight and control cravings and hunger.. thought about making my own slim and sassy sans grapefruit though.. never did but if anyone tries it let me know..

my situation is only relevant to ME! so i am just sharing my knowledge and experiences so as to show that its not all text book we are all different individuals and in different situations.. yes i would love to be off this medication and i will be one day but right now its necessary for me so as i can see my young children grow up and have children of their own..

Unfortunately, I don't remember it was mentioned on this list eons ago. I remember looking it up but not much else, it was one I hadn't heard of before.

Yikes! If you don't mind sharing, what kind of medication is it? Might be good to let anyone know if they are on it.
